The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it.

Established in 1815, Jackson Township most likely was named after General Andrew Jackson, afterward President of the United States. [4] It is one of thirty-seven Jackson Townships statewide. [5] By the 1830s, Jackson Township had two gristmills and three saw mills. [6]

The village of Minster is located in eastern Jackson Township, and a small portion of the village of New Bremen lies in its far northeast corner. As well, the unincorporated community of Egypt lies in the township's west. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Jackson Township has an area of 20.3 square miles (52.6 km 2). [4]
