On July 25, 1987, President Corazon Aquino promulgated the Administrative Code of the Philippines. [1] Chapter 7 of this code specified a list of ten nationwide regular holidays and two nationwide special days and provided that the President may proclaim any local special day for a particular date, group or place.
Proclamation No. 727, series of 2024, contains the general list, [28] with the People Power anniversary, which was not declared a holiday for 2024, being returned but as a working day. [29] A day prior to All Saints' Day (October 31) is included in the list, while All Souls' Day (November 2) is excluded. [29] [30]
The holiday traces its roots to the Cry of Pugad Lawin in August 1896, which marked the beginning of the Philippine Revolution. [3] The date and the location of the cry have been long disputed.
