Sapporo [a] (札幌市, Sapporo-shi, [sapːoɾo ɕi] ⓘ) is a designated city in Hokkaido, Japan. Located in the southwest of Hokkaido, it lies within the alluvial fan of the Toyohira River, a tributary of the Ishikari River. Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido Prefecture and Ishikari Subprefecture.
Hokkaido is the northernmost prefecture of Japan and the largest by area. As of March 2024, Sapporo has 2 completed buildings above 150 meters (492 feet) and 22 completed buildings above 100 meters (328 feet). The first high-rise to be built in Sapporo that reached 100 meters tall was the Sapporo Center Building in 1987.
