By 1971, with enrollment still growing at a fast pace, plans were started to build a new high school along 18th Street in the northern part of the city, roughly 1½ miles north of Middle Road. The former BHS building had a track/baseball field on the front side and a football field on the back side; both are still evident at the site.
The citizens of Bettendorf passed a bond referendum in 1908 to build a new school on 16th Street. The property was acquired in 1907 and Davenport architect Charles R. Spink was hired to design the building. It was built in 1909 for $8,500. [3] The new building was called Bettendorf School, and housed pre-school through eighth grade.

The Bettendorf Community School District is a public school district in Scott County, Iowa. The school district covers 9 square miles (23 km 2 ) that includes the western, northern and central areas of Bettendorf , where it is based, and a small section of the east edge of Davenport .
The floor plans for all six school buildings were designed by the Chicago architectural firm of Smith & Childs, and they are all similar in layout. [2] Local architects were employed to design the stylistic features for each building. Davenport architect Howard S. Muesse was chosen for Lincoln School.
School board members are elected from seven director districts, five within Bettendorf's city limits and two others serving LeClaire-area residents. The board meets twice monthly at the district's administrative center. The high school has one of the largest bands in the state of Iowa, with more than 300 members. [6]
The Wake County school board approved changes Tuesday to its seven-year, rolling school construction program, including putting more money into renovations by adding Cary High to the plan.
