The terrain of Douglas County consists of rolling hills, mostly dedicated to agriculture. The county's highest point is on its southwestern boundary, toward the SW corner, at 1,677 ft (511 m) ASL. The terrain slopes to the east. [5]
Aurora County, named for Aurora, the Roman goddess of the dawn, was created by the Dakota Territory on October 1, 1879. [3] It was organized on August 29, 1881, when three county commissioners were appointed. The county had been established from the combination of former counties Cragin and Wetmore, which had both been formed in 1873.
The terrain slopes to the south and east; its highest point is near its northwest corner, at 1,509 ft (460 m) ASL. [4] The county has a total area of 467 square miles (1,210 km 2), of which 461 square miles (1,190 km 2) is land and 6.6 square miles (17 km 2) (1.4%) is water. [5] It is the fifth-smallest county in South Dakota by area.
South Dakota Highway 52 (SD 52) is a state route that runs just north of the Missouri River, across southeast South Dakota. It begins at a junction with South Dakota Highway 37 north of Springfield , and terminates in Yankton at U.S. Highway 81 , at the junction of 4th and Broadway Streets.
