Eagle Pass is a city in and the county seat of Maverick County, Texas, United States. Its population was 28,130 as of the 2020 census . [ 4 ] Eagle Pass borders the city of Piedras Negras, Coahuila , Mexico , which is to the southwest and across the Rio Grande river.
The park is owned and maintained by the City of Eagle Pass. It was created using Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds after the area was cleared of homes and businesses following major flooding in 1998 and named for Confederate General Joseph O. Shelby, who fled to Mexico through Eagle Pass in 1865. [1] [2]
Eagle Pass voted 83–3 against secession from the Union. [5] Fort Duncan was occupied by Confederate troops during the Civil War. Eagle Pass was chosen as a trade depot for the Military Board of Texas. Eagle Pass was a major terminus of the Cotton Road, custom house and Confederate port of entry into Mexico 1863–65.
In 1933, the City of Eagle Pass Parks and Recreation Department began maintaining the old fort as a public park. [3]: 118 The city formally acquired the property in 1938 at an auction price of $3760 [3]: 119 and converted it into Fort Duncan Park. In 1942 the mayor offered the fort to the military for use during World War II.
