Alachua County Public Schools is a public school district serving all of Alachua County in North Central Florida. [4] It serves approximately 29,845 students in 64 schools and centers. [1] The district is governed by the School Board of Alachua County, which is made up of five board members elected at large who serve staggered, four-year terms.
The district was established on July 1, 2011, by the merger of North Central Community School District and Nora Springs–Rock Falls Community School District. [4] The vote to merge the districts, held on September 14, 2010, [5] was successful, with North Central voters doing so on a 431–63 (85.35%) basis and Nora Springs–Rock Falls voters doing so on a 437–262 (59.95%) basis. The old Highland Springs High School building — built in 1952 and renovated in 2008 — is being repurposed as the Oak Avenue Complex. "The Oak" will be HCPS' first full-service community school hub, part of a strategy to connect students and families with community services.
Although, the school first opened in 1997 as Winter Springs High School, the school had first opened its doors as a temporary home to the student body, faculty and staff of nearby Lake Howell High School the previous year while the Lake Howell campus underwent major renovations.
