The State of Kansas designated the childhood home of Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Ingalls family near Independence as a historic site; it is open to visitors. It is the location where the Charles Ingalls family resided between 1869-1871 and is described in his daughter Laura Ingalls Wilder 's book Little House on the Prairie . [ 37 ]

In 1854, the Kansas Territory was organized, then in 1861 Kansas became the 34th U.S. state. Montgomery County was established on February 26, 1867.

The Booth Theater is a historic movie theater located at 119 W. Myrtle St. in Independence, Kansas. The building was constructed in 1911 and renovated for use as a movie theater in 1926–27. The redesigned theater was the first in Independence to be designed specifically for use as a movie theater.
