The Christian Scientists held services in the building until sometime in the 1960s, when a smaller Black congregation purchased the structure and renamed it St. Stephen's.

A two-story brick building served as a church and school. In 1869, the congregation constructed a frame church measuring 60 by 25 feet (18.3 m × 7.6 m) for $1,500.00. [2] It sat on the site of the present rectory on Virginia Street. The rectory was located on the site of the old courtyard.
