Antirrio is situated at the western entrance of the Gulf of Corinth.It is 3 km northwest of Rio, 10 km north of Patras and 9 km southwest of Naupactus. 8 km to the northwest is the 1,039 m high mountain Klokova [4] (also known as Paliovouna), rising steeply from the Gulf of Patras coast.
At Rio, it crosses the gulf via the Rio–Antirrio bridge and is connected with the A8 at an interchange near Patras. The future, currently under construction, Patras - Pyrgos motorway is typically part of the A5 motorway and will eventually extend to Tsakona near Kalamata.
In 2001, the Rio-Antirio Bridge was completed, linking the western Peloponnese to western Greece. In late August 2007, large parts of Peloponnese suffered from wildfires, which caused severe damage in villages and forests and the death of 77 people. The impact of the fires to the environment and economy of the region are still unknown.
I note a recent edit disputed the Rio-Antirio bridge's title as longest cable-stayed bridge in the world, suggesting that in fact the Sunshine Skyway Bridge is longer. This is a bit misleading - the Sunshine Skyway bridge is mostly an elevated viaduct, with only a relatively short cable-stayed section, which seems to be in no way record-breaking.
