Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area is located in the Davy Crockett National Forest in Houston County east of Crockett. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,237 square miles (3,200 km 2), of which 1,231 square miles (3,190 km 2) are land and 5.7 square miles (15 km 2) (0.5%) are covered by water. Crockett is located near the center of Houston County. Several highways converge on the city. U.S. Route 287 leads north 35 miles (56 km) to Palestine and southeast 46 miles (74 km) to Corrigan. Texas State Highway 21 leads northeast 33 miles (53 km) to Alto and southwest 38 miles (61 km) to Madisonville at Interstate 45.
Cooper was established circa 1900, and by the mid-1930s had a church, a cemetery, and several houses. Many residents moved away after World War II, and by the early 1990s, only a church and a few widely scattered houses remained in the area.
