I am interested in buying a new pump shotgun for home defense and I'm debating in between the Benelli Nova Pump Tactical and the Mossberg 590A1 Special Purpose. I really like the Benelli's aesthetics, ergonomics, the magazine cut-off on the forearm and the dual action bars and rotary head locking lugs which makes it handle all kinds of ammo (light loads to 3 1/2" Magnum loads). Both are quality home defense shotguns. But so is the Mossberg Maverick 88, and it is easily found new for $200. It’s basically a Mossy 500 with a different trigger group and a crossbolt safety rather than the top mounted safety on the 500. It doesn’t come with sling swivels and isn’t drilled and tapped for optics.

Mossberg's, 500 and 590 with 18" and 20" respectively, 930 with a 20". The 930 is pretty much my HD shotty now. The 500 gets quite a bit of vehicular cargo area carry. The 590 seems to be the odd one out. I like it but the 500 is just a bit lighter and overall handier. YMMV Edit: I should add all are open bore.

Mossberg 590 after market front bead sight recommendation. I have a Mossberg 590-50778 home defense shotgun with a 18.5 barrel. The front bead sight is extremely small and I recently learned that XS Sights makes big dot sights for the Mossberg front bead sight. Does anyone have recommendations for a replacement bead sight for the Mossberg 590?
