The Baptist University of Florida was founded in 1943 and is a cooperating ministry of the Florida Baptist Convention. [1] [2] The school first opened its doors in Lakeland, Florida as the Florida Baptist Institute. Two years later, in 1945, it was renamed as the Baptist Bible Institute.

Florida Memorial University was founded in 1879 as the Florida Baptist Institute in Live Oak, Florida.It is one of the oldest academic centers in the state. [3] Soon after, the American Baptist Home Mission Society gave the school its full support, and the first regular school year began in 1880.
The institution was founded as Florida Bible Institute in 1932, in Temple Terrace by Dr. William T. Watson, an evangelical tent preacher from North Carolina and pastor of a large Christian and Missionary Alliance church in St. Petersburg. [1] The name was changed to Trinity College of Florida in 1947.
Additionally, Morehouse College has been affiliated with the convention alongside Shaw University and Selma University. The American Baptist Churches USA-affiliated institutions of Virginia Union University, Florida Memorial University, and Virginia University of Lynchburg have also affiliated with the convention.
The Seminary started as the Baptist Bible Institute in the Garden District and later relocated to the current location in the heart of Gentilly. On May 17, 1946, the SBC revised the institutes' charter to enable it to become a seminary, and the name was changed to New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. [5]
