Greenwood, Mississippi first hosted minor league baseball in 1910, when the Greenwood "Scouts" became members of the six-team, Class D level Cotton States League. [1] The Cotton States League was reforming after not playing the 1909 season and the Greenwood team was added as a new franchise in the league.

The 1933 eight–team Dixie League was under the direction of president J. Alvin Gardner. The Baton Rouge Solons won the 1933 league championship. After one season of competition, the Dixie League was split into the East Dixie League and West Dixie League, with both leagues competing in the 1934 and 1935 seasons.

The East Dixie League was created when the Dixie League split up into the East Dixie League and West Dixie League in 1934. Eleven cities were represented in the league; three were in Arkansas, two were in Louisiana, and six were in Mississippi.
