In 1952, Calabar Theological College and Calabar High School moved from their location at Studley Park to Red Hills Road, where 60 acres (240,000 m 2) of land (then called "Industry Pen") had been purchased for the re-siting of both institutions. At the time, this was a thinly populated, undeveloped area and many people thought the move unwise.
The college was founded in 1966, [1] [2] from three earlier colleges: Union Theological College (Methodist, Presbyterian, Moravian, Congregationalist and Disciples of Christ), Calabar College (Baptist) and St. Peter’s College (Anglian).
The church also runs two-degree awarding theological institutions, the Hugh Goldie Lay Theological Training Institution Arochukwu in Abia State (an affiliate of Abia State University, Uturu) founded in 1918, and the Essien Ukpabio Presbyterian Theological College, Itu Akwa Ibom State founded in 1994 (an affiliate of the University of Calabar). One of the college's trainees, Samuel Bill (1864–1942) from Belfast, responded energetically. In 1887, he set sail, without financial backing. The Calabar Mission could not afford him, and he started work alone at the mouth of the Qua Iboe River in December 1887, designing and constructing for himself a house, and the church at Upenekang.
The region of Calabar called Diamond Hill takes its name from the vessel. [1] In 1898 the school began teaching tailoring and bakery, with the products sold in the city markets. Agricultural students who worked on maintaining the botanical gardens and public parks in Calabar were given free board, clothing and tuition and some pocket money.

By mid-2024, several more institutes had been accredited at ATS. They included Kairos University which was founded in 2021 by Sioux Falls Seminary, South Dakota, Evangelical Theological Seminary Pennsylvania, Houston Graduate School of Theology Texas and Taylor College and Seminary in Edmonton, Alberta. [9]
