The tournament was originally sponsored by Phonogram before changing its sponsor in 1975 to darts board manufacturer, Winmau. The World Masters was originally contested as the best of 5 legs (first to 3) before later transitioning to the set format.

It took place from 10 to 13 October, with 10 October play at the Bonus Arena for the non-stage matches, and 11–13 October play at the Hull City Hall , which hosted the stage element of the event for the third year.
Controversy hit the tournament in May when it was confirmed by the British Darts Organisation that the Winmau World Masters had been moved from its original dates of 26–28 October to a new date of 16–18 November [1] clashing directly with the Grand Slam of Darts - a new tournament which was hoping to feature the top players from both darting organisations - the BDO and PDC.
