Concord (/ ˈ k ɒ ŋ k ər d / KON-kerd) [10] is the most populous city in Contra Costa County, California, United States.According to an estimate completed by the United States Census Bureau, the city had a population of 122,315 in 2023, [11] making it the tenth most populous city in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Cowell is a former unincorporated community now annexed to Concord in Contra Costa County, California. It lies at an elevation of 259 feet (79 m). Cowell was named for Joshua Cowell, local landowner. [2] A post office operated at Cowell from 1922 to 1969. [2] Cowell was a company town for Cowell Portland Cement. [2]
Concord became a postal village in 1854 when John Duncan became postmaster at the northwest corner of what is now Dufferin and Centre Streets. The area's name is likely linked to Hiram White (1788-1859) who came to Vaughan Township from Concord, Vermont in 1818. [4] White farmed in the area (Lot 8 Concession 3) north of the village. [5]
