Tracheotomy tubes and endotracheal tubes are often attached to ventilators to assist in breathing. In the chronic (long-term) setting, indications for tracheotomy include the need for long-term mechanical ventilation and tracheal toilet (e.g., comatose patients, extensive surgery involving the head and neck).
However, mechanical ventilation can provide ventilatory support during spontaneous breathing to ensure adequate gas exchange. General anaesthesia can also be induced with the patient spontaneously breathing and therefore maintaining their own oxygenation which can be beneficial in certain scenarios (e.g. difficult airway or tubeless surgery).
A separate complication that may occur includes a misplaced intubation. Specifically, if the measured length of the NG tube is too long, the tube may coil in the stomach, causing the tip of the tube to be in the esophagus or the duodenum. On the other hand, if the tube is measured too short, the tip of the NG tube may only reach the esophagus.
