The film was shot in and around Brafferton Arbor, a street on the Buttershaw Estate in Bradford, West Yorkshire, where Andrea Dunbar lived and worked.. The film was inspired [8] by so-called verbatim theatre, with audio recordings of Lorraine Dunbar and other family members, lip-synched by professional actors in set-designed environments.
Andrea Dunbar (22 May 1961 – 20 December 1990) was an English playwright. She wrote The Arbor (1980) and Rita, Sue and Bob Too (1982), an autobiographical drama about the sexual adventures of teenage girls living in a run-down part of Bradford, West Yorkshire.
Brafferton and Helperby is a civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It contains 34 listed buildings that are recorded in the National Heritage List for England . Of these, one is listed at Grade II*, the middle of the three grades, and the others are at Grade II, the lowest grade.
Brafferton is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Brafferton and Helperby, in the former Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 257, increasing to 311 at the 2011 Census. [1] On 1 April 2019 the parish was merged with Helperby to form Brafferton and Helperby. [2]

[1] He was born and lived with four siblings in a house on Brafferton Arbor (since demolished) and was mostly raised by his mother, who also worked at Baird Television Ltd. assembling televisions, [1] or as a cleaner. [2]
