The Tapti River (or Tapi) is a river in central India located to the south of the Narmada river that flows westwards before draining into the Arabian Sea. [2] The river has a length of around 724 km (450 miles) and flows through the states of Maharashtra , Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh . [ 2 ]

The Tapti River and the Gawilgadh ridge of the Satpura Range form the boundaries of the reserve. In 1985 Melghat Wildlife Sanctuary was created. The Tapi river (also known as Tapti river) flows through the northern end of the Melghat Tiger Reserve, through a forest which lies within the catchment area of the river system.

Mandvi is a town located in the Mandvi tehsil of Surat District, Gujarat state, India and lies on the banks of the Tapti River. It is around 61 kilometres (38 mi) east of Surat. Mandvi is situated at an altitude of 50 meters and 113 km (aerial distance) from sea coast.The town is connected to surrounding towns by roads.
According to legend, Tapi river also known as Tapti, is the daughter of Surya (the Sun God). Some says that Surya created the Tapi river in order to save himself from his own intense heat. The river finds mention in the great Indian epic Mahabharata, according to which Tapti had married Sanvaran, a legendary hero of the moon dynasty.
