Begun in 1937 and expanded over 25 years, this is the first and best example of Wright's innovative hexagonal design. [2] A Usonian home patterned after the honeycomb of a bee, the 3,570 square foot house incorporates six-sided figures with 120-degree angles in its plan, in its numerous tiled terraces, and even in built-in furnishings.
The home uses a square unit or modular system to reduce costs, but aesthetically introduces 30 and 60 degree angles to eliminate right angle corners. [4] The strong horizontal line created by the house descending three levels down the sloping wooded lot mimics the silhouette of Wright's Prairie School houses. [5]
The straw huts saw even further use. An average of five men, fifteen women and fourteen children occupied the site. In 1857, both the York and Toodyay Convict Hiring Depot underwent changes which resulted in Pensioner Guards having no further use for the Pensioner Barracks at the old Toodyay townsite. In 1857, Lot 69 and Lot R1, were sold off.

This 5,100-square-foot (470 m 2) house is on a 2.3 wooded acre lot, set well back from the street. Gridley met Wright through P. D. Hoyt, owner of the P. D. Hoyt House in nearby Geneva. The Gridley house was built in 1906. Wright named the house "Ravine House", because of the sloping wildflower ravine to the south of the house.
