The Sand River or Polokwane River [3] (Afrikaans: Sandrivier) is a watercourse in Limpopo Province, South Africa, a right hand tributary of the Limpopo River. Its new name "Polokwane River" is homonymous with the name of the town of Polokwane , formerly Pietersburg, about 200 kilometres (120 mi) upriver from its mouth.
The Ranch Resort is 200 kilometres (120 mi) north of Pretoria, the Republic of South Africa's capital city, and 24.5 kilometres (15.2 mi) south of Polokwane, the capital of Limpopo Province. It is situated between the South African National Highway N1 and the R101 – with entrances to The Ranch Resort from both roads.
These striking plants occur in abundance on the slopes of what used to be regarded as the 'sacred mountain' in the Modjadji Reserve north-east of Polokwane. When observed superficially these plants with their bare stems and shiny, dark-green fern-like leaves look like palm trees, but they are actually not even related to any species of palm.
