Thatto Heath station is branded Merseyrail with trains operated by Northern. The City line is the brand name used by Merseytravel on services out of the mainline platforms of Liverpool Lime Street railway station to 26 stations on its sponsored network, and cross-boundary destinations outside of the Liverpool City Region.
Liverpool Lime Street is Liverpool's principal railway station and is located, as the name denotes, on Lime Street opposite St Georges Hall. As Liverpool's main station, it is served by all of Liverpool's longer distance services and many local services; including Merseyrail's City [ 2 ] and Wirral [ 3 ] (via the lower level platform) lines.
The Mersey railway tunnel was extended under dry land to Liverpool Central station in 1892, changing James Street's status to a through station. By this time, there were trains from Liverpool branching from Hamilton Square station terminating at Birkenhead Park and Rock Ferry stations in Birkenhead. The line was electrified in 1903. [2]
There are also extra services between Liverpool Central and Hooton during peak times. Northern Line services use Platforms 1 and 2 at the station. Trains to Liverpool Central and Hunts Cross use Platform 1; trains to Southport, Ormskirk and Kirkby use Platform 2. All Wirral Line services depart from Platform 3.
