Erector Set (trademark styled as "ERECTOR") was a brand of metal toy construction sets which were originally patented by Alfred Carlton Gilbert and first sold by his company, the Mysto Manufacturing Company of New Haven, Connecticut, in 1913.
The A. C. Gilbert Company was an American toy company, once one of the largest in the world. Gilbert originated the Erector Set, which is a construction toy similar to Meccano in the rest of the world, and made chemistry sets, microscope kits, and a line of inexpensive reflector telescopes.
The kit was created by Alfred Carlton Gilbert, who was an American athlete, magician, toy-maker, business man, and inventor of the well-known Erector Set.Gilbert believed that toys were the foundation in building a "solid American character", and many of his toys had some type of educational significance to them.
Gilbert worked on perfecting the Erector for more than a year before introducing it at toy fairs in 1913. The toy drew crowds, and some of the biggest buyers in the business placed orders.
Gilbert was educated at the Tualatin Academy and attended Pacific University in nearby Forest Grove, Oregon, where he was a member of the Gamma Sigma Fraternity. [3] He left Pacific after 1902 and transferred to Yale University, financing his education by working as a magician, [4] and earning a degree in medicine.
Gilbert successfully lobbies the government to allow him (and other toy manufacturers) to resume the production of toys, in particular the building toy known as an Erector Set, for Christmas, thus earning Gilbert the name "The man who saved Christmas." Ultimately, Gilbert's brother Frank returns from the war in time to celebrate Christmas.
Other exhibits cover the historic site and A. C. Gilbert, the inventor and toy maker best known for his invention of the erector set. [5] The museum is an experimental learning workshop for design and specializes in building projects for children blending science and invention.
