On March 3, 1881, by 21 Stat. 507, Louisiana was for a third time divided into Eastern and the Western Districts, with one judgeship authorized for each. [3] The Middle District was formed from portions of those two Districts on December 18, 1971, by 85 Stat. 741, [ 3 ] making it one of the youngest districts in the United States.
The Commission was created by Article IV, Section 21 [2] of the 1921 Constitution of the State of Louisiana. [3] It succeeded the Railroad Commission of Louisiana that was created by the 1898 Constitution. [4] The commission has five elected members chosen in single-member districts for staggered six-year terms.
The Louisiana Circuit Courts of Appeal are the intermediate appellate courts for the state of Louisiana. There are five circuits, each covering a different group of parishes. Broussard was founded in 1884. It was named after Valsin Broussard, a prominent local merchant, who formed the first vigilante committee when his own store was robbed. He was a direct descendant of Joseph Broussard de Beausoleil, one of the first 200 Acadians to arrive in Louisiana on February 27, 1765, aboard the Santo Domingo. [5]
