On November 12, 2010, Northside ISD police officer Daniel Alvarado shot and killed 14 year old student Derek Lopez. Alvarado witnessed Lopez punch another student at a bus stop and pursued him, then radioed his supervisor who instructed him to stay with the victim. Alvarado returned to his car and ordered the victim into his car and pursued Lopez.
William Howard Taft High School is a public high school in the Northside Independent School District (NISD) of San Antonio, Texas, United States.As with all NISD high schools, the school is named for a United States Supreme Court justice, in this case former Chief Justice William Howard Taft, who was also the 27th President of the United States.
Sotomayor opened as the twelfth high school campus in the district on August 22, 2022, and is currently the newest NISD campus as of August 27, 2022. The high school is one of the most expensive and largest in NISD, costing the district $131.7 million dollars to build and spanning 75 acres.
