The skating system is a method of compiling scores in ballroom dance competitions. It is used for the final placings of competitors and is based upon a method that prioritises 'majority' and 'overall performance' as given by judges scores to solve problems that arise in what can be a subjective determination of quality of art as sport.
Although scoring at dance competitions vary, judges usually give scores based on score technique, performance, costume, music, and difficulty level of the performance. Each competition's ranks are different. The performances are usually ranked within each dance category. Most competitions have opportunities for dancers to win title positions.
Routines are measured and recorded on a judging criteria rubric during a performance and given to the team for review after the competition is complete. Each judging criteria sheet contains categories in which teams will receive a score from one to ten, one being considered very poor and 10 being superior.
