ICN is governed by a Council of National Representatives (CNR). The CNR is the governing body of the ICN and sets policy, admits members, selects a board of directors, and sets dues. As of 2013, there were 135 National Representatives (one for each member organization). National Representatives are selected by each member association.

The Canadian Nurses Association (CNA), known in French as the Association des infirmières et infirmiers du Canada (AIIC), is the national professional association representing registered nurses, nurse practitioners, licensed and registered practical nurses, registered psychiatric nurses and retired nurses across all 13 provinces and territories in Canada.
The institute was founded in 2002 as a merge of two previous CNR institutes: Istituto CNUCE and Istituto di Elaborazione dell’Informazione (IEI). The institute is named in honor of Alessandro Faedo, former President of CNR and former rector of the University of Pisa, for his important contributions to the development of Computer Science in Italy.
