James Earl Carter Sr. (September 12, 1894 – July 22, 1953) was an American politician and businessman who represented Sumter County in the Georgia House of Representatives from January 12, 1953, until his death on July 22, 1953. Commonly known as Earl Carter, he was the father of Jimmy Carter, the 39th U.S. president from 1977 to 1981.
Bessie Lillian Carter (née Gordy; August 15, 1898 – October 30, 1983) was an American nurse. Carter's son, Jimmy Carter , served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. She was also known for her contributions as a Peace Corps volunteer in India and for writing two books during her son’s presidency.

James “Jimmy” Earl Carter Jr. was born on Oct. 1, 1924, in the small, rural town of Plains, Ga., as the first child of parents James Earl Carter Sr. and Bessie Lillian Gordy Carter.
After the death of his father in July 1953, Carter returned to the family homestead in Plains to help his ailing mother, Bessie, by taking over the family farm.

He was the eldest child of Bessie Lillian Gordy and James Earl Carter Sr., and a descendant of English immigrant Thomas Carter, who settled in the Colony of Virginia in 1635. [ 3 ] [ 4 ] In Georgia, numerous generations of Carters worked as cotton farmers. [ 5 ]
