The county built a larger frame courthouse in 1868. The fourth courthouse, built in 1885 was made from red stone and served as the Pleasanton City Hall when the county seat was moved to Jourdanton. The current Atascosa County Courthouse is the fifth structure to serve as the seat of Atascosa County government.
Jourdanton is located near the center of Atascosa County approximately 37 miles (60 km) south of downtown San Antonio. At the center of the city is the intersection of Texas State Highways 16 and 97. Highway 16 leads north to San Antonio and south 165 miles (266 km) to Zapata near the Mexican border.

Benton City Institute was an important early educational institution in the area, and its ruins are the only remaining building in town. It was built in 1875, [6] established in 1876, [7] and originally called the Benton City Normal Institute, operating under a Texas law distributing state funds to supplement private tuition, but owned and operated by educators.
