Bridgerweight boxers today weigh between 200 (90.7 kg) and 224 pounds (102 kg). In earlier times the minimum weight was anything above 175 pounds for the heavyweight division, and many early heaviweight champions weighed under 200 pounds. This weight division was created and currently only recognized by the World Boxing Council.
Amateur weight classes also specify the minimum weight (which the same as the maximum weight of the next highest class). [1] For safety reasons, fighters cannot fight at a higher weight. This also meant that even the heaviest weight class has a limit, albeit a lower bound. The lower limit for "heavyweight" was established in 1948 at 81 kg.
In 2020, the World Boxing Council introduced the bridgerweight division, which has similar weight limits to those used in super cruiserweight fights. In 2023, the World Boxing Association introduced a "Bridgerweight" division with the same weight limits as the WBC's bridgerweight division. [2]
This category lists professional boxers who have held a full Bridgerweight world championship by the World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Council (WBC), International Boxing Federation (IBF), or World Boxing Organization (WBO).
