West Union, incorporated July 20, 1881, is a town and the county seat of Doddridge County, West Virginia, United States. [5] The population was 669 at the 2020 census . [ 2 ] The town is located along Middle Island Creek at the junction of U.S. Route 50 and West Virginia Route 18 ; the North Bend Rail Trail also passes through the town.

Doddridge County was officially created in 1845 from parts of Harrison, Tyler, Ritchie, and Lewis Counties of what was then still Virginia. It was named for Philip Doddridge (1773–1832), the late statesman of western Virginia who was the leading voice for westerners during the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1829–1830.
Prior to the U.S. Highway System it was West Virginia Route 1 and in the 1930s, the road was not finished in Maryland. Today the section of US 50 from Clarksburg to Parkersburg on the Ohio River is part of Corridor D of the Appalachian Development Highway System .
