South Tahoe High School was founded in 1952 in South Lake Tahoe. [2] The school's campus was originally at the current South Tahoe Middle School, but it was later moved to its present location. South Lakes' first graduating class was the class of 1981 (who attended the school for three years). [4] South Lakes underwent a $55 million renovation from winter 2006 through August 2008. The renovation was completed in time for the 2008–2009 school year. [5] A second renovation, completed in the winter of 2018, gave the school a new wing.
The logo was first used in the 1980s as helmet emblems for the Carroll Dragon varsity football teams, and was gradually adopted as the district mascot. Previously, Carroll Middle School used the mascot of the Knight, using the same color scheme as the Dragons. The Knight mascot was retired in the 1990s.
