Granite and granite pegmatite (2545 ± 30 Ma) intrude metasedimentary rock of the Miners Delight Formation in the western part of the greenstone belt. The South Pass pluton is a pegmatitic granite west of South Pass City, and the Sweetwater granite is a fine-to medium-grained leucocratic granite that occurs to the west of the South Pass pluton along the Sweetwater River and Lander Creek.
The Seminoe Mountains greenstone belt represents a fragment of an Archean greenstone terrane within the Wyoming craton.The greenstone belt was mapped by Hausel, [1] who identified significant gold anomalies at Bradley Peak in banded iron formation, quartz veins and in a large altered zone of metabasalts.
Gold was discovered there in 1868, and by 1870, at the height of the mine's operations, the population in Hamilton City was 75, forty of whom were miners. The original boom of mining activity "busted", however, from 1872 to 1874, but by the 1880s a new era of economic prosperity had dawned.
Brown & Hawkins was a business venture between partners Charles E. Brown of Montreal, Quebec, Canada and T.W. Hawkins of Roanoke, Virginia. The two men met in Nome during the Gold Rush. In 1935, Lake Harris established the Jay Em Stone Company, making tombstones and building products from stone quarried around the Rawhide Buttes. After the 1930s, Jay Em declined as the automobile made it easier for local residents to travel to larger towns. The general store lasted until the late 1970s. Lake Harris died in 1983 at the age of 96.

Hiram M. Hook was born around 1831, in Pennsylvania. [4] Hook served as the stage station manager in Dogtown, Nebraska, nine miles east of Fort Kearny. [5]From 1864 to 1865, Hook and James Moore pastured cattle in a glade north of Pleasant Valley in Larimer County, Colorado Territory; the area would be later named the Hook & Moore Canyon.
