The Nee Soon Group Representation Constituency is a five-member Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the north region of Singapore. The GRC includes most of Yishun town, the private residential areas along Sembawang Road and Upper Thomson Road, the southern part of Sembawang and the Nee Soon Camp.
Yishun (/ ˈ iː ʃ uː n / EE-shoon), formerly known as Nee Soon, is a residential town located in the northeastern corner of the North Region of Singapore, bordering Simpang and Sembawang to the north, Mandai to the west, the Central Water Catchment to its southwest, Ang Mo Kio to its south, as well as Seletar and Sengkang to its east and southeast respectively.
In 2011, it was merged into a newly formed Nee Soon GRC. This SMC and Nee Soon Central SMC were formerly under the Sembawang-Nee Soon Town Council, which comprises Sembawang GRC (which has six members with this SMC) and Nee Soon Central SMC from 2001 until 2011.
Nee Soon was one of the rural areas in the north of Singapore. At its inception in 1959, there were only 8,694 voters even including present-day Ang Mo Kio town, whereas wards nearer to the city centre such as Kreta Ayer had 14,173 voters in a much smaller area.
The seat consists of Yishun Town Centre (Neighbourhood 9), Neighbourhood 6 and part of Neighbourhood 7. The constituency was formed in 1988 and has been held by the ruling party from 1988 to 1991 when the People's Action Party lost the seat to Singapore Democratic Party 's Cheo Chai Chen but Cheo lost to Ong in 1997 Singapore general election .
