Nathaniel Joseph Ruess (pronounced / r uː s / ROOSS; [2] born February 26, 1982) [3] is an American singer and songwriter. He formed the indie pop band The Format in 2002, and later went on to form the band fun. in 2008.
Sam Means and Nate Ruess left their previous bands Nevergonnascore and This Past Year and formed the indie-pop duo, The Format, in February 2000. [2] [3] [4] The Format announced a hiatus on February 4, 2008. On September 29, 2009, Means released the original motion picture soundtrack for the indie film The Sinking of Santa Isabel. [5]
The band consists of Jack Antonoff (of Steel Train), Andrew Dost (of Anathallo), and Nate Ruess (of the Format). [6] Fun formed in 2008, and their debut studio album, Aim and Ignite, was released in 2009 to moderate commercial success. The band rose to prominence with the release of their second album, Some Nights, in 2012.

In 2008, Nate Ruess (formerly the frontman of the Format) asked Antonoff to join him and Andrew Dost (formerly of Anathallo) in a new band, which became Fun. [17] Antonoff was already well acquainted with Ruess and Dost, as their former bands had all toured together. [17] The new band released its debut album, Aim and Ignite, in 2009. [18]
From 2009 to 2013, Antonoff dated musician Nate Ruess. [16] For Antonoff's brother's band Steel Train, she and Ruess both provided backing vocals for the song "Dakota" from the 2007 album Trampoline. [17] Her brother and Ruess were both in the band Fun.
