The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center is a zoo in Belize, located some 47 kilometres (29 mi) west of Belize City on the Western Highway. Set in 12 hectares (29 acres), the zoo was founded in 1983 by Sharon Matola. It is home to more than 175 animals of about 48 species, all native to Belize.
In 1981, Chaa Creek Cottages was founded as the inaugural jungle lodge in Belize, featuring two thatched-roof cottages constructed from local materials. The establishment expanded with a road built by the British Army Corps of Engineers in 1983, allowing for the addition of a dining room alongside the existing six cottages.
Sharon Matola (June 3, 1954 – March 21, 2021) [1] was an American-born Belizean biologist, environmentalist, and zookeeper.She was the founding director of the Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center, a zoo which was started in 1983 to protect native animals that had been used in a documentary film in Belize. St. Herman's Blue Hole National Park is a national park located just off the Hummingbird Highway in Cayo District of Belize, near Belmopan, the capital city. It is over 500 acres (2 km²) in area, and contains two cave systems (St. Hermans and Crystal), various natural trails, and the cool jungle pool from which the park gets its name.
