Schubert was born in Dessau where he studied with Franz von Hoesslin and Arthur Seidl and in Munich with Hugo Röhr and Heinrich Kaminski. From 1926 to 1929, he was a master student of Siegmund von Hausegger and Joseph Haas at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich .

Winterreise was composed in two parts, each with twelve songs, the first part in February 1827 and the second in October 1827. [1] The two parts were also published separately by Tobias Haslinger, the first on 14 January 1828, and the second (the proofs of which Schubert was still correcting days before his death on 19 November) on 30 December 1828.

Heine's Buch der Lieder is divided into five sections; all the poems set in Schwanengesang are from the third, Die Heimkehr (The Homecoming). In Schwanengesang, this song stands at the end of the Heine songs, although Heine's order is different and it has been argued that the sequence works better dramatically when the songs are performed in their order of appearance in the Buch der Lieder.
The composer's parents, Franz Schubert, a schoolmaster, and his wife Maria, a cook, lived in an apartment in the house, then called Zum roten Krebsen ("The Red Crab"), in Himmelpfortgrund , a district of Vienna. Their son Franz was born here on 31 January 1797; he was the twelfth of fourteen children, of whom five survived infancy.
