Jugtown Pottery was founded in 1921 [2] by Jacques and Juliana Busbee, artists from Raleigh, North Carolina, who in 1917 discovered an orange pie dish and traced it back to Moore County. There, they found a local tradition of utilitarian pottery in orange, earthenware , and salt glazes .
The museum contains the largest public display of Lotus Ware, an award-winning fine porcelain ware produced only for a short period in the 1890s by the Knowles, Taylor, Knowles pottery of East Liverpool. George N. Fulton was born in Loudoun County, Virginia in 1834, but by 1835 the family had moved to Fultonham, Ohio, located in Muskingum County, Ohio., [1] [2] His father, James Fulton, was a local potter. His mother, Mary Ellen Newman Fulton, oversaw the family as George Fulton learned his trade from his father.
It was the site of the pottery kiln and home of William Dennis (b. 1769) and his son Thomas (b. 1791) and remained in operation until 1832. The pottery produced simple, utilitarian redware, and a variety of decorative slipware and tableware products. The William Dennis pottery and house site was located in 1974. [2]
