It is located in the historic Friuli region, about 90 kilometres (56 mi) northwest of Trieste and about 30 kilometres (19 mi) north of Udine. The municipal area is situated in the valley of the Tagliamento River, separating the Julian Alps in the east from the Carnic Prealps in the west.
