The series follows the adventures of Kazuma Satou who, after he dies of a heart attack after pushing a girl out of the way of a truck, which turned out to be a tractor, is sent to an RPG-like world, going on various adventures alongside a goddess named Aqua, a magician named Megumin, and a dame named Darkness.
In Axel, Megumin and Yunyun attempt to join parties, but Megumin's high-powered Explosion spell proves to be too overwhelming for her party members, while Yunyun's shyness scares off potential suitors. The two eventually partner together and fight Hoost, another demon hoping to take back Chomusuke. After parting ways, Megumin meets Kazuma and Aqua.
Megumin then uses explosion and destroys the ruins. Kazuma tells Ran what happened, who is uninterested. Ran soon leaves Kazuma and appears to be quarreling with Luna. Kazuma approaches them, to help sort out the quarrel. Turns out Ran isn't actually Kazuma's fan. Ran was put on a quest to motivate Kazuma and his party to do more quests.
Kazuma recognizes the Japanese inscription on the writing and accidentally activates it, switching bodies with Iris. He then realizes the necklace is one of the Divine Treasures Eris told him about. While Iris takes the opportunity to leave the castle unnoticed with Megumin, Kazuma stays behind to pose as Iris until the spell wears off.
