The criteria for award of the ESB is that a soldier must perform in 30 Warrior Tasks (Skill Level 1) and battle drills, and five unit–level mission essential tasks, chosen by a commander, [9] in addition to completion of a 12-mile foot march, a land navigation test and the Army Combat Fitness Test.
The Army's goal is to have one skill level 4 trainer per brigade. Trainers at skill level 3 or higher are certified to teach all courses lower than their certification level. Skill level 1 and 2 courses are now usually taught and participants certified at the unit level. Skill level 3 and 4 courses are usually held at Ft. Benning, GA.
This provides a process that aligns the development of competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities, and attributes) and behaviors in civilian volunteers for them to become Soldiers who are physically ready, grounded in Army Values, and competent in their skills so can contribute as leaders or members upon arrival at their first unit of assignment.
Other occupations also learn basic warrior tasks and skills and small unit tactics, but tend to focus on more of a balanced approach. Complete the following First Aid tasks to specified standards: CPR, evaluate a casualty, manage the airway, and control bleeding. Pass both Squad STX lane evaluations with a minimum rating of satisfactory or higher. Successfully complete Warrior Forge without a performance waiver. Medical waivers are acceptable.
