The Willamette University School of Medicine, OHSU's earliest predecessor, was founded in the 1860s in Salem, and was relocated to Portland in the 1870s. [11] In 1915, Willamette University and the University of Oregon merged their medical programs to form the University of Oregon Medical School, and in 1919 the school moved to its present location on Marquam Hill in Southwest Portland.

The school was merged with the University of Oregon's medical school in Portland in 1913. In 1974, the school was separated from the University of Oregon and later renamed the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). Today, the school is a fully independent institution, operating under the direction of the Oregon State System of Higher Education.
In 1887, a state medical school was chartered by the University of Oregon that would later become OHSU. During the 20th century, various academic institutions began offering nursing, dental, and public health education for the first time in Portland. Meanwhile, institutions emerged to offer medical services to disabled children and the indigent.
In 1961, the Michigan State Board of Trustees decided to begin a two-year medical program at Michigan State University. Several grants aided the development of the program. [8] Michigan State University appointed Andrew D. Hunt, MD as the first dean of the College of Human Medicine in 1964. [8] [9]
