The first light marking the harbor's northern point was an oil lamp placed in 1827 on a wooden tripod on Jameson Point. When the work was begun on the breakwater in 1881, the pole was relocated as the breakwater was extended SSE into the harbor. The breakwater was completed in 1899 and the present light and keepers' structure was finished in 1902.
The Newburyport Harbor Light, also known as Plum Island Light, built in 1788, is a historic lighthouse on Northern Boulevard in Newburyport, Massachusetts. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] The original 4th order Fresnel lens is still in use, one of only five original glass Fresnel lenses still in use in Massachusetts.
The current light is a fixed green signal that is visible for 12 nautical miles (22 km; 14 mi). The light is made green by an acrylic cylinder that surrounds the lens. Other structures at the light station that are still standing are the 1903 oil house (restored in 2004) and the 1872 keeper's house (currently United States Coast Guard offices). [2]
