Kentucky Downs is a Thoroughbred horse racing track located on the border between Kentucky and Tennessee, in the city of Franklin, Kentucky, just off Interstate 65. It is unique among American tracks in that it is a European-style course—its surface is all turf (grass) instead of dirt, and it is not oval in shape.
The race was open to 20 horses, who qualified for the race by earning points on the 2023 Road to the Kentucky Derby. The Kentucky Derby is a Grade I stakes race at a distance of 1 + 1 ⁄ 4 miles (2.0 km) and has been run at Churchill Downs racetrack since its inception in 1875. The purse for 2023 was US$3 million. Kentucky Downs co-manager Ron Winchell said that the name change reflected the track's close proximity to Nashville, Tennessee. The positioning of the Nashville Derby at the end of August, Winchell added, was designed to attract American and European horses, as well as fit between major three-year-old turf stakes run in Kentucky and New York.
