Gimbel Brothers (known simply as Gimbels) was an American department store corporation that operated for over a century, from 1842 until 1987. Gimbel patriarch Adam Gimbel opened his first store in Vincennes, Indiana, in 1842. In 1887, the company moved its operations to the Gimbel Brothers Department Store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
A post office called Kimball was established in 1889, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1942. [2] The community was named for Alanson M. Kimball , member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Wisconsin's 6th district.
The chain's demise was finalized in 2004 when the last Big Bear store closed its doors, following Penn Traffic's second Chapter 11 bankruptcy in a decade. Better store locations were acquired and reopened as Giant Eagle or Kroger stores; as of May 2014, many former Big Bear stores (especially in Ohio and West Virginia) remain empty.
The center now has restaurants, bars, banks, an urgent care facility, hardware store, sporting goods store, video game store, pet supply store, Goodwill, a Giant Eagle Market District, and more. In January 2015, Macy's announced that the company was closing three Ohio stores, including the Kingsdale location, by the end of March. [5]
Goldblatt's was founded in 1914 by brothers Nate and Maurice Goldblatt. Immigrants from Poland, the Goldblatt family ran a grocery store and butcher shop on Chicago's West Side. Nate and Maurice opened their first store near the corner of Ashland and Chicago Avenue. By 1922, the store recorded sales of over $800,000. [2]

In 1991, ten side-by-side Big Bear and Harts locations were converted to the Big Bear Plus format. By 1996, all Harts stores were either closed or converted to Big Bear Plus Stores. Big Bear was bought out by Penn Traffic in April 1989, [ 1 ] and had closed all stores by early 2004.
