Junoon (translation: The Obsession) is a 1979 Indian Hindi language film produced by Shashi Kapoor and directed by Shyam Benegal. The film is based on Ruskin Bond's fictional novella, A Flight of Pigeons, set around the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The film's soundtrack was composed by Vanraj Bhatia, and cinematography by Govind Nihalani. [1]
The novella is an adaptation of the novel Mariam: A Story of the Indian Mutiny (1896) by J. F. Fanthome [2] and is a mix of fiction and non fiction and was adapted into a film in 1978 called Junoon [3] by Shyam Benegal, starring Shashi Kapoor, his wife Jennifer Kendal, and Nafisa Ali. [4] [5]

Shyam Benegal was born on 14 December 1934 in a Konkani-speaking [7] Hindu family [8] in Hyderabad, as Shyam Sunder Benegal. [9] His father hailed from Karnataka. [10] When he was twelve years old, he made his first film, on a camera given to him by his photographer father Sridhar B. Benegal.
