"Giddy Up a Ding Dong" is a rock and roll song which rose to prominence in 1956, when it was featured in the film Rock Around the Clock, starring Bill Haley. It became a hit in several countries for the group Freddie Bell and the Bellboys , and is perhaps their best known recording .
The A-side "Ding Dong", was written by Bell and his friend Pep Lattanzi in 1953. [4] Later known as "Giddy Up a Ding Dong", it was not a hit in the United States , but it was popular in Australia , France , and the UK , where it climbed to number four in the UK Singles Chart . [ 5 ]
In 1959, the group appeared in the Italian film Europe By Night, with the song "Giddy Up a Ding Dong", which became a hit for them in Italy and resulted in an invitation to tour there. They became popular in Italy and recorded several singles for the Italian Broadway label.
The two numbers performed by Freddie Bell and the Bellboys are also unique to the film and do not correspond to their studio recordings, with "Giddy Up a Ding Dong" being a noticeably different arrangement from Bell's studio version.
They recorded "It Must Be Love" and "Giddy-Up-A-Ding Dong" with backing by George Barrow and Jerome Richardson on tenor sax; Budd Johnson on baritone sax, Sam Price on piano, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Joe Benjamin on bass, and Bobby Donaldson on drums.
