Desmoplastic reaction to breast cancer. Desmoplasia refers to growth of dense connective tissue or stroma. [2] This growth is characterized by low cellularity with hyalinized or sclerotic stroma and disorganized blood vessel infiltration. [3] This growth is called a desmoplastic response and occurs as result of injury or neoplasia. [2]
In one study, the lifetime risk of recurrence was 20% for smaller (<2 cm) tumors without lymph node metastasis. Larger tumors without lymph nodes had 38% risk of recurrence. Presence of lymph nodes in tumors of any size showed 62% and 86% risk of recurrence in patients with 1-3 and >4 positive lymph nodes, respectively.
Lymphovascular invasion, especially in carcinomas, usually precedes spread to the lymph nodes that drain the tissue in which the tumour arose. Conversely, cancers with lymph node spread (known as a lymph node metastases), usually have lymphovascular invasion. Lymph node metastases usually precede secondary tumours, i.e. distant metastases.
