Northgate started as an open-air shopping mall in the northern environs of Seattle. It was the first post-war shopping mall in the United States and originally went by the name of "Northgate Center", in light of its location at the north edge of Seattle (and being beyond the city limits at the time). It became a park of King County, Washington, in 1968, [2] and in 2003 was acquired by the City of Tukwila, its current owner. The non-profit Starfire Sports operates the sports complex on the site under a 40-year agreement with the city.
